There has been an informal celebration of the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. On August 6, 1965 the bedrock legislation was signed into law. One of the most well known Civil Rights activists from that period in history is John Lewis. I am writing this because his name, profile and comments continue to be reported without the important political context that it deserves. Currently, John Lewis is a Congressman from the 5th district of the state of Georgia. At that time Lewis served as Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
According to an article in Sojourners Magazine, "Few in the U.S. Congress have the moral stature of Rep. John Lewis. He earned it the hard way. Lewis was beaten, perhaps more often than any other human being in the civil-rights movement. He was jailed more than 40 times. He was heckled, spat upon, and threatened more times than he can count. Yet through it all, Lewis and the movement prevailed—at the lunch counters in Nashville in 1960, on the burned-out buses of the Freedom Rides in 1961, at the 1965 march in Selma."
"On March 7, 1965, Lewis and Hosea Williams led about 500 marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and were savagely beaten by Sheriff Jim Clark and the Alabama State Police. That day became to be known as "Bloody Sunday". That march and its aftermath outraged the nation and led directly to the passage later that summer of the Voting Rights Act.
Now this picture to the right is of the Alabama State Police attacking protesters in as they crossed the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma. Highlighted in the lower right corner of the photo, is the young John Lewis getting his brains splattered by an Alabama State Police Officer. During that time, ALL Alabama State Police Officers were Democrats. This attack by the police was lead by the racist, segregationist, Democrat powerbroker, Sheriff Jim Clark of Dallas County, Alabama.
Now this racist, segregationist Sheriff Clark was a registered Democrat. Today, Congressman John Lewis is a Democrat. Congressman Lewis is a boisterous Left-Wing Liberal who regularly blames Republicans for the violence and racism he endured as a protester against DEMOCRATS in the 1960's.
(The photo below is of Democrat Sheriff Jim Clark billy clubbing a handcuffed black female civil rights protestor as she is being held by 2 of his deputies. Sheriff clark never apologized for this. Congressman Lewis treats Republicans who helped he Civil Rights movement they way he should have treated this animal).
To date Congressman Lewis has not demanded that the Democratic Party admit responsibility for crimes and/or discriminations against Blacks. In a twist of irony, while Lewis was getting his head beaten by Democrats, Republicans led the Congress in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as well as all other major Civil Rights laws in the history of this Country.
Congressman Lewis in many interviews has stated his forgiveness of those unrepentant segregationists who heckled him, spat on him, beat him, and threaten him and his family, while viscously attacking Republicans as if they [the Republicans] were the perpetrators of hate, violence, and slavery in this nation.
